NEW STUDENT INFORMATION
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT CLASS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR BEGINNERS?
If you are new to yoga or aerial yoga, we would recommend starting with the all level class. This class makes all of the benefits of yoga available to new students while, at the same time, challenging advanced practitioners. This is possible in an all levels class because the teacher will focus on proper alignment of your body in the poses with conscious awareness of breath, and linking breath with movement. Advanced practitioners move deeper and are offered more challenging poses, inversions and balances, new students learn how to get out of their heads and move their bodies through the poses to develop greater strength and flexibility. Having students of all levels in one class generates an amazing group energy that promotes the understanding of yoga.
We offer a yoga basics class which is great for new students or more experienced students looking to refine and deepen their understanding of poses.
We also periodically offer a 4 Week Beginner Series, where you'll gain basic knowledge, personalized assessment and guidance to build a solid foundation for your yoga practice at the studio and at home. We are also offer private yoga classes for beginners who want to get their feet wet before joining a group class. Contact the studio at info@fireflyyogacenter.com if interested in learning more about our 4 Week Beginner Series and check out our workshops and training page for the next series.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR CLASS?
Arrive 10-15 minutes before class. Leave yourself enough time to set up your mat and transition from the outside world to an internal state of mind without any rush. Classes begin promptly, doors will be locked, and you will not be able to join a class after the first five minutes.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
You only need your body to practice yoga. Firefly Yoga has all of the props you may need for your practice as well as a limited number of mats that can be borrowed. However, we recommend you bring your own mat and water. We offer for sale clothes, mats, towels, and water as well as other yoga related jewelry and accessories.
I AM NOT FLEXIBLE, CAN I STILL PRACTICE YOGA?
Flexibility is something yoga gives you; you don't have to be flexible to start a yoga practice. Yoga brings flexibility to the body. When you sit a lot during the work day, or when you're engaging in repetitive motion activities, you're shortening your muscles; yoga allows you to lengthen and expand, and release toxins that build up during these activities.
Increased flexibility is not yoga's only objective, nor its only benefit. The ultimate benefit of yoga is to harmoniously unite body, mind and spirit in a healthful physical practice and can be experienced regardless of whether you're able to easily touch your toes.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PRACTICE YOGA?
Yoga is a journey. The postures and techniques you learn are designed to guide your body and your mind. By approaching your yoga practice with discipline, consistency and commitment the benefits will become yours naturally.
We recommend practicing 3 to 6 times per week and have developed our monthly unlimited plans to support this type of practice. With dedication, the long term results will be yours. In the meantime, you will enjoy the ongoing increased strength, flexibility and peace of mind that comes from a regular practice.
MY YOGA INSTRUCTOR SAYS NAMASTE AT THE END OF CLASS. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Namaste is a Sanskrit word, it is a greeting in India used when people meet. It is a gesture of love and respect.
Translation: ‘Nama’ means bow, ‘as’ means I, and ‘te’ means you.
Namaste literally translates as “bow me you” or “I bow to you.”
The hand gesture or mudra, that normally accompanies verbalizing Namaste at the start or end of class is done by placing the palms together and pressing the thumbs into the center of the chest (heart chakra) or in the center or the forehead (third eye chakra). This symbolizes connection of the body, mind and each other.

AERIAL YOGA FAQS
Aerial Yoga classes use a device that we refer to as a hammock, it hangs from the ceiling and helps support the weight of the body, so that you can learn how to achieve proper postural alignment through relaxation rather than effort, enhancing a relaxed and peaceful state of mind as well. The classes are designed to build strength and flexibility while maintaining its key component: having fun! Through the use of the hammock the classes include swinging, inversion, traditional and adapted Yoga poses that uniquely encourage conditioning of the mind, body and spirit.
Who Can Do Aerial Yoga?
Anyone can do it! You do not need any prior experience in either yoga or aerials to come to class. Many moves and poses might be challenging – like any new and unfamiliar physical activity. Just like Yoga, you will feel your strength and flexibility increase as well as your own body awareness and developing good postural habits.
Why Do Aerial Yoga?
It’s Fun! But seriously, getting off the ground will give you a new perspective. Where else do you get a chance to fly without getting on a plane? Aerial yoga builds strength utilizing muscles in a different way than yoga and is the perfect compliment to your yoga mat practice. Aerial yoga utilizes the body’s ability to pull, climb and hang. Think of it as cross training. It strengthens and stretches muscles not utilized in a mat based yoga class. An Aerial Yoga class combines strength training, discipline, control and grace making you feel stronger and empowered. Aerial Yoga can give you a more intense stretch than traditional Yoga poses on their own. Utilizing your own body and holding it up suspended in the air increases upper body and core strength, leaving you with a more well rounded and movement efficient body.
Benefits Of Aerial Yoga
* Practice advanced inversions and backbends without neck or spinal compression
* Develop upper body strength
* Stretch deeper without experiencing strain in the lower back because the fabric supports part of your body weight
* Increase your spatial intelligence by experiencing new and exciting ways to move through suspended space
* Develop a strong core by trying new shapes and positions up in the air which cultivates deep inner core stability
* Improve balance through use of the fabric
* Be able to align your spine correctly in each pose with careful support of the fabric
* Bring more oxygen to your brain by gentle inversions on the fabric
* Reinforce proper body alignment carrying onto your daily life and throughout your other fitness practices.
Who Should Stay Grounded?
We may do inversions in class and while being upside down can be quite beneficial, there are some who have conditions which make it dangerous for them to invert. If you have any of the below conditions, please consult your physician before participating in an aerial class:
* High or low blood pressure
* Glaucoma
* Pregnancy
* Neck Injuries
* Heart Conditions of any kind
* Epilepsy
* Eye Problems
